This buttercream Christmas Tree Canvass Cake could not be easier to create, and I love the simple, sweet blueprint!

This Christmas Tree cake  design is perfect for holiday parties, and kids would love to help decorate the tree with candies and sprinkles! There are so many fun decorating options!

How to Make an Easy Christmas Tree Cake

Materials

  • 9x13 sheet cake (although this can be hands adapted for any sheet cake)
  • Buttercream Frosting- We used our Classic Vanilla Buttercream Recipe
  • Coloring Gels - We used Americolor Mint Light-green, Super Blood-red, Xanthous, Chocolate brown
  • Candy/Sprinkles of Choice- Nosotros used Ruddy Sixlets and Christmas Confetti sprinkles
  • Pipage Tips- Wilton 125 for large ruffles, Wilton 102 for scarlet ruffles, Wilton 3 for pocket-size cherry-red & white dots, Wilton 21 for trunk
  • Fondant- Optional. Used along with a minor & medium sized star cutter to brand small stars & larger star on pinnacle.
  • Nutrient coloring pen- optional, only helpful when mark my block for carving
  • Waxed newspaper- Optional, but helpful for keeping the platter clean if the block is not resting on it's own cake board. See details in Notes.
  • Block Base- I used 3 16 inch cake cardboards glued together and wrapped with a white plastic tabular array cloth (stapled on the underside to secure)
  • Viva Newspaper Towels- Optional, only if you are using a crusting buttercream, it'south an piece of cake way to shine your frosting!

Instructions

  1. Slice Sail Cake diagonally from corner to corner. It is easiest to do this when the block is partially frozen so that you can easily handle the sliced block.
  2. Piece the two sections together to form a large, broad triangle shape every bit demonstrated in the video. Our tree was placed on a 16 inch cake base of operations (meet Materials above for details). Use your cake base of choice!

Notes

My cake was partially frozen when I carved information technology. This makes it much easier to carve and handle.

When marking off my tree for carving, my trunk was centered & marked 2 inches wide and about one inch long. From the bottom ii corners of the big triangle, I marked each side at approx. two.5 inches. This gave a slightly curved bottom border once carved.

When using a petal tip for the ruffled leaves, the small stop of the teardrop shape is pointed towards you. For the scarlet ruffles, the pocket-size finish of the tip is pointing directly up.

I did not employ a cake cardboard beneath my sheet cake but sometimes I practice. Information technology's up to you. If you make up one's mind to, you tin cleave your cake, place on a cake lath, and trim away the excess lath before decorating. Then, elevator the busy cake onto the cake base.

Since I busy the block direct on it's final cake base, I used sheets of waxed paper to keep the lath make clean. Exist sure to just barely slide the waxed paper beneath the cake on all sides before frosting so that it can exist easily removed afterward. I like to chill the cake to firm things up before removing the waxed newspaper.

I used the Viva paper towel method of smoothing. When using a crusting buttercream, frost last coat of frosting onto your room temperature cake. Allow to crust (approx x mintues). And so smooth over with a Viva newspaper towel. Viva make has no impressions or quilting and so it makes the frosting nice and polish. The hot knife/spatula method is another good choice for smooth frosting.

*This is a very forgiving design. Don't worry too much most perfectly smooth frosting every bit you'll have lots of ruffles and decorations to fill the cake! You may fifty-fifty determine to fill the cake from bottom to pinnacle with ruffles which would be a great look too! ;0)
